Legs (American odds, comma-separated):

🎯 Bet types: pros & cons

Moneyline

  • Simplest: just pick the winner
  • Favorites pay little; one upset erases many wins

Point spread

  • Evens out mismatched teams near 50/50
  • Standard -110 means you need ~52.4% just to break even

Totals (over/under)

  • No need to pick a winner
  • Weather, pace, garbage time — high variance

Parlays / SGPs

  • Small stake, big payout
  • Vig compounds each leg; books' highest-margin product. Same-game legs are correlated and priced to favor the house

Player props

  • Fun, follow specific players
  • Lower limits & often higher hold; injury/minutes risk

Live / in-game

  • React to what you see
  • Fast taps + emotion = chasing losses; delayed feeds

"Boosts" & promos

  • Can be real extra value
  • Wagering requirements; designed to build habits

Futures

  • Season-long interest from one bet
  • Money locked for months, often 20–40% hold

💼 Investments: pros & cons

Individual stocks

  • Own part of a real business; long-term growth & dividends
  • One company can drop 50%+; hard to beat the index

Index ETFs

  • Instant diversification, low fees, historically strong long-run returns
  • Still falls in crashes; boring (that's the point)

Crypto

  • 24/7 market, potential for big gains
  • Extreme volatility, hacks/scams, no earnings to anchor price

Options

  • Leverage; can hedge positions
  • Most short-dated options expire worthless; time decay works against buyers; selling uncovered can lose more than you put in

Margin

  • More buying power
  • Borrowed money amplifies losses; margin calls force selling at the bottom

High-yield savings / T-bills

  • Safe-ish, predictable yield
  • Won't grow much beyond inflation

Investing ≠ gambling: stocks have positive expected value over time on average; sportsbooks have a built-in edge against you. Neither is guaranteed.

🏦 Bankroll tips

  1. Only use money you can afford to lose completely — never rent, bills, or borrowed money.
  2. Set a fixed monthly entertainment budget; stake 1–2% of it per bet.
  3. Use the apps' deposit limits, time limits, and cool-off tools.
  4. Never chase losses. Walk away after a set loss or time limit.
  5. Track every bet. Most people overestimate their win rate.
  6. Build an emergency fund and retirement savings before speculating.
  7. Shop lines across books — a half-point or 10 cents matters long-term.

Implied probability

The win chance baked into odds. -150 → 60%. +200 → 33.3%.

Vig / juice / hold

The book's cut. Two sides at -110 add to 104.8% — that extra 4.8% is the house edge.

Expected value (EV)

Average result per bet if repeated forever. Most bets are negative EV.

Closing line

Final odds before start; beating it consistently is the best skill signal.

Expense ratio

Yearly fund fee. 0.03% vs 1% compounds to a huge difference.

Diversification

Spreading money so no single loss sinks you.
